Poland starts caught between Germany and the USSR, with less industry and less time than almost any other playable power in 1936. This guide assumes you want, at minimum, to put up a fight against the historical clock of September 1939.
Starting Point
You can't compete in army size or industry with Germany. The real question isn't "can I win the war?" but "can I hold out longer and make it more costly than history recorded?" That completely changes which focuses to prioritize.
Recommended Route
- Fortification and border-defense focuses as soon as possible, instead of chasing an offensive army you won't have time to build.
- Secure guarantees or support from France and the UK during the diplomatic phase, even if historically they arrive too late.
- Design your army to hold out for weeks, not to win the war — every division that survives longer counts as a success.
- Have a plan for a government-in-exile if the capital falls, instead of playing as if total defeat isn't a real possibility.
Common Mistakes
The most common mistake is trying to match Germany piece for piece, which is impossible with Poland's starting industry. The second mistake is not preparing any contingency plan: when Warsaw falls without a fallback or government-in-exile plan, the game ends there unnecessarily.
Next Steps
This guide will expand with alternate routes for trying to avoid or delay the invasion through diplomacy. Also check out the combat width guide to get the most defensive value out of a small army.
